Master of Business Administration (Computing)

Aims:

The aim of the MBA (Computing) is to prepare students to move from management and supervisory positions into senior management, executive and CIO roles within the IT industry. The needs of existing IT managers who aspire to move upward into senior management positions will be catered to with the emphasis on exploiting information technologies for productivity and competitiveness. 

The course incorporates preparation for certifications from the ITIL Certification Management Board (ICMB), the Project Management Institute, the Examination Institute for Information Science (EXIN) and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA)

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, graduates will have acquired a firm understanding of the major areas of knowledge which underpin general management, including:

  • The concepts, processes and institutions in the production and marketing of goods and/or services and the financing of business enterprise or other forms of organisation;
  • The impact of environmental forces on organisations, including: ethical, social, economic, and technological change issues; and the effect of international developments;
  • The ability to respond to and manage change;
  • The concepts and applications of accounting and finance;
  • Management theory and HRM issues;
  • The processes and problems of general management at the operational and strategic level;
  • Business strategy, and
  • Leadership and entrepreneurship.

Graduates will be prepared to obtain a range of international industry certifications in IT Service Management, IT Quality Management and IT Governance (elective).

Industry Certifications:

The following certifications are included;

  • ITIL® V3
  • ISO/IEC 20000
  • ITIL Intermediate level examination for Release, Control & Validation (elective)
  • ITIL Intermediate level examination for Operational Support & Analysis (elective)

The MBA will also help prepare students for industry certification from the Project Management Institute (PMP and CAPM) , ISACA (COBIT) the Australian Institute of Project Managers and Prince2.

Course Structure:

The course consists of 12 subjects with a total value of 96 points.
For students that do not qualify for any credit, the recommended duration to complete the Masters Degree is 2 years. There are 3 sessions per year and we recommend a commitment of 2 subjects per session.

Entry Requirements:

An undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution and a minimum of three years' work experience.

Students without a tertiary qualification may be admitted via a Graduate Certificate pathway if they can demonstrate they have a minimum of seven years’ appropriate professional/managerial work experience.

Credit:

Credit is available for Industry (Certification-based) Subjects to students who can provide proof that they have passed relevant industry examinations including ITIL, ISO20000, the Project Management Institute, the Australian Institute of Project Managers or Prince2. Prospective students can fill out the questionnaire  to obtain an estimate of their credit entitlements.

Academic Credit:

Credit is available for Academic Subjects to students who have completed Postgraduate study that covers the same content as a subject in the program. Thorough detail of any completed studies that are proposed for credit must be supplied.

Actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the course.
