What is this course about?

This course will provide students with the advanced strategic, communication and IT management skills needed to excel in an executive management role within the IT industry. Students will develop knowledge in areas such as managerial finance, strategic practice, risk management, professional communications, project management, and IT governance. The course will also build students’ capacity to apply this knowledge in a professional setting. As part of the course, students will also acquire the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for multiple industry certifications in a specific IT management area.

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate and apply advanced knowledge of current and emerging trends in the management discipline, including the areas of organisational behaviour, leadership, financial management, risk assessment, managing a project, and strategic practice;
  • critically analyse and evaluate contemporary management theories in the context of professional practice;

Abstract

This subject introduces the student to some managerial decisions that are made with regard to the financial operations of the firm. This subject aims to explore the effects of destructive leadership in organisations and groups and the behaviour of organisational / group leaders. This subject explores psychological, psychoanalytical and systemic approaches to assist in identifying, understanding and coping with toxic leadership styles and behaviours. The subject will also explore the interesting tension between the perception of dysfunctional leadership in organisations and groups where others may perceive the leaders as heroic or transformational. Leadership in Teams will explore how leaders manage teams and how teams shape the requirements for effective leadership. Students will examine the theory and practice of leading productive teams and facilitating groups. The subject will identify the distinction between team leadership and team facilitation skills. Abstract

This subject explores the relevance of leadership theory to students’ experience of real world issues. An investigation of the ethical dimensions of leadership in relation to the well being of organisations and the broader society provides a basis for discussions in this subject. Students will focus on leadership under pressure, in times of crisis, and in response to global issues and trends. Ethical dilemmas in leadership will also be examined. Students will be required to track and explore the dynamic nature and emerging complexity of contemporary issues and how leadership is mobilised in the face of them.

Abstract

This subject examines the identification, measurement and management of risk using multi-disciplinary techniques. The role of the decision maker and the role of decision making heuristics and bias are studied together with key qualitative and quantitative techniques used to model, measure and treat risk. The subsequent treatment of risk through risk retention, self insurance or the transfer and avoidance of risk is also examined. The subject allows students to identify these concepts from the perspective of a risk manager, e.g., establish risks in relation to individuals, property and legal liability. Entry requirements

There are two pathways to entry into the Master of Business Administration (Computing).

  1. An undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution (or equivalent).
  2. Professional attainment and/or work experience.

Applicants without a tertiary qualification may be admitted first to the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Computing). Upon successful completion of the four subjects in the Graduate Certificate, students will then be admitted with full credit into the Master of Business Administration (Computing) to complete their remaining units of study.

Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Computing)

The Master of Business Administration (Computing) is an articulated course that incorporates the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Computing). The certificate can be stand alone or, upon successful completion, students may proceed (with full credit) into the Master of Business Administration (Computing).

Credit

Academic credit is available to students who can provide proof they have passed relevant industry certification examinations or who have completed previous study. No fees are charged for subjects students receive credit for.

Prospective students can obtain an estimate of credit entitlements from Industry Examinations by filling out the Credit Eligibility Form.

NOTE: The actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the Degree.
