What is this course about?
Experience a unique MBA designed for leaders of the Digital Century. The Master of Business Administration (Computing) combines the latest in management theory and practice with preparation for the world’s most highly-regarded industry certifications in the areas of IT governance, IT service management, IT quality management and project management.
Aims & Objectives
The aim of the MBA (Computing) is to prepare students to move from management and supervisory positions into senior management, executive and CIO roles within the IT industry. The needs of existing IT managers who aspire to move upward into senior management positions will be catered to with the emphasis on exploiting information technologies for productivity and competitiveness. CSU’s Master of Business Administration (Computing) incorporates preparation for certifications from the following industry associations: Information Systems Audi and Control Association (ISACA), ITIL Certification Management Board (ICMB), and Project Management Institute (PMI). Upon completion of this course, graduates will have acquired a firm understanding of the major areas of knowledge which underpin general management, including:

  • The concepts, processes and institutions in the production and marketing of goods and/or services and the financing of business enterprise or other forms of organisation;
  • The impact of environmental forces on organisations, including: ethical, social, economic, and technological change issues; and the effect of international developments;
  • The ability to respond to and manage change;
  • The concepts and applications of accounting and finance;
  • Management theory and HRM issues;
  • The processes and problems of general management at the operational and strategic level;
  • Business strategy, and
  • Leadership and entrepreneurship.

Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution (or a qualification deemed to be equivalent) and appropriate work experience. Students without a tertiary qualification may be admitted via a Graduate Certificate pathway if they can demonstrate they have a minimum of seven years’ appropriate professional/managerial work experience. Course structure
The course consists of 12 subjects with a total value of 96 points. For students that do not qualify for any credit, the recommended duration to complete the Masters Degree is 2 years. There are 3 sessions per year and we recommend a commitment of 2 subjects per session.

Abstract

This subject introduces the student to some managerial decisions that are made with regard to the financial operations of the firm. Skills are developed in the identification and analysis of financial problems which will allow the student to make informed judgements with regards to the day-to-day financial operations of the firm as well as its long term strategy and position. Students are introduced to the commercial environment in which the firm operates, as it relates to its financial situation.

Abstract

This is an industry subject based on the Project Management Institute (PMI®) methodology (as defined by the PMBoK® - Project Management Body of Knowledge) to prepare students for subsequent PMP® (Project Management Professional) or similar certification. Abstract

The subject covers the interpretation and application of the ISO/IEC 20000 standard and the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), including how to develop the service management capability of an organisation and assess its readiness for certification within the ISO/IEC 20000 Certification Scheme. Abstract

This subject helps students prepare for industry certification in the Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) framework which defines a set of generic processes for the management of IT. Abstract

This subject examines the identification, measurement and management of risk using multi-disciplinary techniques. The role of the decision maker and the role of decision making heuristics and bias are studied together with key qualitative and quantitative techniques used to model, measure and treat risk. The subsequent treatment of risk through risk retention, self insurance or the transfer and avoidance of risk is also examined. The subject allows students to identify these concepts from the perspective of a risk manager, e.g., establish risks in relation to individuals, property and legal liability. Whenever possible, study examples will be based on the real-world problems encountered in the work environment of students.

This subject is focused on the role of the entire Project Management Lifecycle as a means of delivering organisational change. The subject will guide the student from the start of a project idea, through planning, creation of deliverables and handover to the customer or client. Abstract

This subject focuses on the leadership skills, knowledge and understanding required to deliver successful projects as the head of the project team. The typical and common challenges that threaten projects are explored in detail and participants learn how to predict, avoid and deal with these challenges for positive outcomes. Team leadership and management techniques are compared and analysed as well as techniques to handle common interpersonal challenges. Abstract

Program management encompasses the coordinated management of multiple projects designed to implement strategies and deliver specific benefits. Portfolio management encompasses those programs and projects needed to achieve strategic business objectives. This subject gives students the skills and understanding required for coordinated management of multiple projects directed toward strategic business and organisational objectives. Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Computing)
The Master of Business Administration (Computing) is an articulated course that incorporates the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Computing). The certificate can be stand alone or, upon successful completion, students may proceed (with full credit) into the Master of Business Administration (Computing). To graduate with the Graduate Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete the following four core subjects:

  • MGT501 Management Theory and Practice
  • MGT580 Forecasting and Risk Assessment

Credit
Academic credit is available to students who can provide proof they have passed relevant industry certification examinations. Prospective students can obtain an estimate of credit entitlements from Industry Examinations by filling out the Credit Eligibility Form. NOTE: The actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the Degree.
