What is this course about?
CSU’s Master of Networking and Systems Administration offers an advanced course of study in the design, implementation and management of computer networks. Preparation for the world’s most popular industry certifications from major vendors such as Microsoft and Cisco is included as an integral part of the course.
Aims & Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide professionals in the IT industry with an advanced course of study in Networking and System Administration that is current, relevant and integrates industry certification in these fields. Upon completion of this course, graduates will possess:

  • Advanced skills in the design, implementation and management of networks;
  • Higher order system administration knowledge and skills;
  • Preparation skills for industry certifications from IT vendors such as Microsoft and Cisco;
  • Advanced skills in identifying network security risk profiles, defining network security policies and maintaining secure global networks;
  • Problem-solving skills and methodologies when troubleshooting and documenting global internetworking problems;
  • The ability to analyse complex client business and technical requirements and select appropriate inter-network technologies and topologies;
  • Skills in the development of solutions that meet customer business objectives for functionality, performance, and cost.

Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have a computing undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution (or a qualification deemed to be equivalent). Applicants with work experience and/or other academic and/or professional qualifications acceptable to the University will be considered.
Course structure
The course consists of 12 subjects with a total value of 96 points. For students that do not qualify for any credit, the recommended duration to complete the Masters Degree is 2 years. There are 3 sessions per year and we recommend a commitment of 2 subjects per session.

Abstract

This subject allows students to develop skills that are necessary to identify ethical issues that are raised as a result of the advancement of information and communications technology (ICT). The subject will cover areas such as critical thinking, professionalism, ethical theories, privacy, security and crime in cyberspace, intellectual property, freedom of speech and regulation of the internet, systems reliability, and social and ethical issues of emerging technologies. By the end of the subject students should be able to argue consistently and rationally about the moral problems raised by the adoption and use of ICT and propose solutions to those moral problems.

Abstract

This subject is about the TCP/IP protocol suite and how it is used on the internet. It begins with a short history of the internet, the organisations that develop internet standards, and a review of the underlying communications technologies needed for the internet. Detailed examinations of IP addressing, IP routing, as well as the internet layers and protocols are then facilitated. Finally internet applications, IPv6, and the future of TCP/IP are discussed.

Abstract

In this subject students will learn how to scan, test, hack and secure computing systems. The lab intensive environment gives each student in-depth knowledge and practical experience with the current essential security systems. Students will begin by understanding how perimeter defences work before learning to scan and attack networks. Students will be prepared for the EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) industry certification exam during this subject.

Graduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration
The Master in Networking and Systems Administration is an articulated course that incorporates the Graduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration. The certificate can be stand alone or, upon successful completion, students may proceed (with full credit) into the Master of Networking and Systems Administration. To graduate with the Graduate Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete the following four core subjects:

Credit
Academic credit is available to students who can provide proof they have passed relevant industry certification examinations. Prospective students can obtain an estimate of credit entitlements from Industry Examinations by filling out the Credit Eligibility Form. NOTE: The actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the Degree.
